 I would characterize the ethics of Mr. Smith's was displayed poorly. While Mr. Smith worked for a bad firm, he shouldn't have the right to get revenge. Revenge is for the weak. Instead he should've left on good terms and started his new career to a better start. 

The way the firm responded to the controversy was interesting. They didn't take the blame completely but did state to newer better improvements. They had a good strategic communication response to the crisis. I would tell Mr.Smith to not try to get revenge towards a company he works for. Other companies may take that as a potential threat to their company if they hire Mr.Smith, such as would he write a bad memo about their company if he doesn't like their culture as well.
